What to Expect on Your First Day with Crossfit

Anyone considering Crossfit may be hesitant because they’ve heard it’s intense. It’s natural to worry about the first-class being something you can’t handle.

After all, who wants to fail?

Those who know Crossfit said there isn’t anything to worry about because the coaches want you to succeed.

There are some things you need to know before you head to the gym for your first Crossfit class.

The first day won’t be super intense.

Every Crossfit coach knows those who come on the first day aren’t ready for the intense workout. They want you to come back.

The first day is for the coach to see what your baseline is so he or she can make the class workouts something the entire class can handle but yet remain challenged.

The class will start with a warm-up and then some moderate exercises.

You will learn nine movements.

Crossfit coaches will introduce you to the nine basic movements during the class. The movements are:

  • Air squat
  • Overhead squat
  • Front squat
  • Push press
  • Shoulder press
  • Deadlift
  • Push jerk
  • Sumo deadlift high pull
  • Medicine ball clean

The movements are designed to mimic things people do in everyday life.

For instance, rising from a sitting position is a squat.

Picking a heavy object from the floor is a deadlift.

You will do a WOD

This is a term you will come to know well in CrossFit. WOD stands for Workout of the Day.

Some use a daily routine posted on CrossFit internet sites while other coaches create their own.

The WOD comes about 30 minutes into the class, after the warm-up and the foundational skills time.

It lasts around 15 to 20 minutes to allow time for cool-down exercises.

Those who take CrossFit training tend to love it. They find it competitive, challenging, and always interesting.

Understanding what will happen that first day will better mentally prepare you and, hopefully, get you excited to start.
