Top 5 Marathon Race Tips

While many running events are canceled right now due to the Coronavirus, some organizations are shifting to virtual events. Whether you’re running a solo race on your local streets or are waiting until the lively events come back, here are some tips to run your best race:

1. Don’t overdress

At the starting line, it can be a little chilly. Once you’re off and running, you warm up fast. How do you dress for the temperature change? Runners usually add a second layer of “throw away” clothes. In other words, they wear an extra layer that they get rid of once it’s no longer needed. Some runners put a pair of long socks on their hands and arms to keep them warm since they’re cheap and easy to toss.

2. Think of the race in phases

A marathon is long, but you can’t think about the distance when you’re running. Instead, think of the race in smaller pieces. Set a goal of finishing the first three miles, then the next three.

3. Trim time by following the race line

There’s usually a line marked on the ground that shows the race track. If you want to make sure you’re running the shortest distance, follow it rather than stray too far off to the sides.

4. Invite your family

Everyone, no matter how many races they’ve completed, needs a little sideline love. Invite your family and ask them to set up at different points along the course to cheer you on. Their excitement will provide the motivation you need to keep going.

5. Don’t do anything new

On race day, don’t do anything new. If you haven’t worn a certain shirt in training, don’t wear it on race day. If you haven’t eaten certain protein snacks during training, don’t eat them on race day. Stick to what you know.

With these five tips, you’ll be ready for your next race.
