6 Tips for Yoga Beginners

Interested in trying yoga? Whether you have a basic knowledge of the practice or have no idea what “Downward Dog” is, these tips are meant to help get you started.

A growing number of people are turning to Yoga right now. Since so many people are practicing social distancing due to the COVID outbreak, practicing yoga at home is an easy way to get exercise and ease stress.

When you’re ready to start, here’s what you should know:

  1. Find a good teacher

Whether you’re practicing at home or at a yoga studio that’s following CDC guidelines, you need a good teacher. Do some research, ask your friends for recommendations, and read reviews.

  1. Be prepared to breathe

One of the key components of yoga is to learn to breathe. By doing so, you can relax your body and find harmony between your body and mind.

  1. Know that there’s a learning curve

At your first yoga class, you won’t be able to pull off all the poses. That’s ok. Don’t compare yourself to others. Do what you can and learn as you go.

  1. Avoid eating beforehand

It’s best not to eat for 1-2 hours before yoga. Keep drinks to a minimum too. Avoid caffeine as well.

  1. Modify positions as needed

Your body may not be able to achieve a certain pose, but there are always alternatives. A good teacher will mention these modifications during class so you can work within your ability.

  1. Don’t rush

Yoga isn’t about speed. Take your time, work through each pose, and breathe. Don’t watch the clock. Instead, be in the moment.

Yoga offers a great outlet for both exercise and mental relief. Remember, there are great yoga apps that offer instruction as well, if you want to practice social distancing.
