Lewis Hamilton has made quite a career for himself as a Formula 1 legend. While you may assume that health and fitness aren’t a priority for a race car driver, you’d be wrong. Hamilton, who is a six-time champion, says it plays a very important role.

So, what does Hamilton do to stay in great shape? He recently spoke with Men’sHealth and provided some interesting insight into his fitness routine.

What does Lewis Hamilton do to stay in shape?

He says he likes to lift weights, but he has to be careful. “Formula 1 drivers can’t be too heavy: more muscle means more kilos,” he said. He does a lot of running, which he says helps during the long races.

“Over the course of a two-hour race, you might have an average heartbeat of 160-170bpm. During qualifying, it can go up to 190bpm. That’s why I do a lot of running,” he said.

How has his training changed over the years?

He told Men’sHealth that he works more on his core now than ever before. He uses several different exercise routines to build his core, including muay Thai and Pilates. When he was younger, he says he simply got in the car and drove to win.

What does Hamilton’s diet look like?

Hamilton made the switch to a plant-based diet, which he says gives him consistent energy and has had positive effects on his sleep and overall health.
