Can Taking Melatonin Help Your Erectile Dysfunction?

Not getting enough sleep—or poor quality sleep—has been linked to erectile dysfunction (ED). Knowing that melatonin can help you fall asleep and stay asleep, is it possible melatonin—naturally occurring or as a supplement—could also help your ED? Several studies seem to indicate that it could.

Melatonin levels and erectile dysfunction in humans

A recent study published on Prostate.net looked at 62 men with varying degrees of ED and 22 men without ED to see if melatonin levels played a role.

The researchers ruled out significant differences between the men in terms of factors like cardiovascular disease, smoking, diabetes, hypertension and alcohol use.

They found that the men who didn’t have erectile dysfunction had higher levels of melatonin.

Melatonin for erectile dysfunction in rats

A 2016 study on rats that were given melatonin to study its effects on ED found that the rats with arterial occlusive disease (one of the leading causes of erectile dysfunction) improved. More specifically, the melatonin seemed to “prevent or reduce functional or morphological changes induced by chronic ischemia on penile structure and function.”

Melatonin combined with Viagra

In 2014, researchers tested a combination of melatonin and the ED drug Viagra on animals. They found that the melatonin/Viagra mix prevented oxidative damage to tissues in the penis, which helped prevent erectile dysfunction.

Treating erectile dysfunction with Viagra

While there is no large-scale conclusive evidence about melatonin’s ability to treat ED, there is plenty of proof that  Viagra can treat ED.

Viagra has been found to work for more than 80% of men with ED, which is why it’s the best-selling ED drug in the world.

If you’re thinking about trying Viagra to treat your ED, make an appointment with your doctor. Viagra is available by prescription in the United States. It’s the FDA’s way of ensuring that it’s pure, safe and effective.
