Planning Sex Around Viagra How to Get the Most Out of the Little Blue Pill

For first-time Viagra users, planning your pill around sex can be intimidating. There may be concerns that timing your erectile dysfunction pill incorrectly can either hinder your ability to have sex or leave you with a massive erection when you don’t want one. But Viagra is actually relatively easy to use once you know how it works. Here’s a quick overview.

How Viagra works

One of the main causes of erectile dysfunction is a lack of blood flow. Viagra, a brand name for sildenafil citrate, helps stimulate blood flow to the penis.

Ideally, you should consume the pill about 60 minutes before engaging in sexual activity. That’s because the concentration tends to peak about 1 hour after taking the pill. There are some other considerations, however:

  1. Viagra can start working within 30 minutes. So, while 60 minutes may be the typical peak, for some men it peaks between half an hour and two hours.
  1. Viagra comes in different doses: 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. The effects of a 100 mg dosage can last for up to 4 hours. That’s not to say that its effects are the same at 4 hours; it will likely be considerably weaker.
  1. Although you can take Viagra with or without food, it’s important to know that taking it after a high-fat meal might delay absorption.
  1. Viagra only works when you are sexually aroused, so taking the pill won’t give you a sudden and unbearable erection if you’re not sexually stimulated.

Addressing erectile dysfunction

Sometimes, simply modifying your lifestyle can help address some of the causes of erectile dysfunction. It’s worth trying some of the following changes to see if they improve your sex life.

  • If you smoke, make every effort to quit.
  • Reduce the amount of alcohol you consume.
  • Engage in more physical activity.
  • Make an effort to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.
  • Talk to your doctor about medications that may be causing your erectile dysfunction.
