Gout: How to Handle Your Flare-ups

As many people out there know, gout is one of the most annoying and painful conditions one can have. As an augmented version of arthritis, gout affects over 6 million men and 2 million women in the U.S. alone. Many people describe gout as needle-like pains in the joints, the equivalent of having broken glass between your joints. Unfortunately, most gout attacks and flare-ups can last a matter of hours to a span of weeks.

Let’s go over a few gout tips on how to get a handle on this condition:

1. Diet

Controlling your diet is the single best way to get control of gout flare-ups. A diet consisting of mainly fats, alcohol, and foods that cause uric acid to build up should be avoided at nearly all costs. Red meats, sardines, bacon, mussels, yeast, and alcohol are some of the foods that exacerbate gout the most. Controlling one’s diet will also help with weight, which in turn will help to improve gout flare-ups and make them less likely to occur, at a lower intensity. Ignoring this most crucial point can open up the path to kidney stones, which can be uncomfortable and dangerous. I eat a diet mainly consisting of vegetables, including small amounts of chicken or turkey meat to satisfy my meat cravings.

2. Medication

Gout can be controlled and reduced by using various medication and over-the-counter products. 4. Control your Stress

I find that high levels of stress can often lead to a gout flare-up. This is consistent with most health conditions. Take a break from your hard day and hit the swimming pool, read a book, or get a massage. It’s important to take your mind off the stressful day-to-day issues that seem to come up. Consider Yoga, work on your breathing techniques, and locate a meditation App; there is a myriad of tools available on the web as well that can help make a difference in your lifestyle.
