Can You Prevent an Enlarged Prostate?

An enlarged prostate is common in many men. Nine out of 10 men are projected to have an enlarged prostate as they hit their 80s. An enlarged prostate isn’t something inevitable.

Experts say there are some things men can do to prevent all the problems of an enlarged prostate, although they can’t actually prevent the prostate from becoming enlarged. Those who make changes while they are still younger can go a long way to delay this problem, or at least reduce symptoms, as they get older.

Below are three things you can do to prevent an enlarged prostate.

1. Have regular doctor’s checkups.

Talking to your doctor about any symptoms you may have can go a long way to preventing your prostate from causing issues. A doctor can give you medication when enlargement is first noticed, preventing it from getting worse quickly.

2. Look at your current medications.

Some medications can increase your risk of an enlarged prostate. Medications for things like erectile dysfunction, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or migrations sometimes include beta-blockers. That raises your risk.

Ask your doctor if any of the side effects of your medication will raise your risk of an enlarged prostate.

3. Check your bladder.

Your bladder can also affect your prostate. Some men don’t empty their bladder, which means they will need to urinate more. This doesn’t cause an enlarged prostate but can present the same symptoms.

Also, some older men have “pockets” in their bladder that hold urine. This can result in urinary tract infections as you age as well as cause more stress on your prostate. It is best to get this corrected, if you can, while you are younger.

You may not be able to prevent an enlarged prostate outright but understanding your risks and tackling them at a younger age can perhaps delay an enlarged prostate or at least help reduce the symptoms more quickly.
